Winners of MGA championships put on impressive displays of golf
that were as hot as the summer weather BY ADAM HOLZSCHUH
mga championships recap
As the 2010 MGA and Met Area golf season begins to creep toward the home stretch, several trends have emerged. The first is that his has not been a season full of Cinderella stories. MGA championships have been won with commanding performances that we’ve
come to expect from the upper echelon of Met Area golfers. Even
in some of the strongest of fields, this year’s champions have
distinguished themselves and proven to be the best of the best.
The second theme consists of two related parts: heat, and the condition
of the championship courses. It has been an unusually sultry summer, especially in July when record-breaking heat enveloped the Met Area for days on
end and produced regular downpours. Yet even through these challenging
conditions, venues for MGA events remain in outstanding playing condition.
For that, credit must be given to all of the Met Area superintendents and
their staffs for a job well done.
What will the remaining two months of MGA and Met Area championships bring? The Cinderella story may still come, perhaps at the much-anticipated Met Open, set for August 24–26 at Bethpage Black. But for now,
we are left to appreciate the remarkable ability of the competitors who earned
trophies so far this year. Here are their stories.
