The names have changed, but the main attraction – great golf
action – remains the same at the Commerce Bank
Championship. What is now a Champions Tour event started
as the Northville Invitational in 1987, one year after Raymond
Floyd’s stirring victory in the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills
made it clear that Long Island was ready for an annual tour
event. This year’s event will be played the week of June 23-29, with the three
tournament rounds scheduled for June 27-29 at Eisenhower Park’s Red Course in
East Meadow, N.Y.
The event’s original name came from Northville Industries, the company led by
Harold, Jay and Gene Bernstein, who were the driving forces behind creating the
tournament. After a successful debut as an unofficial event, the Champions Tour
– then the Senior PGA Tour – added the Northville Long Island Classic to its
schedule in 1988. The event has been nationally televised every year since
1990, and Commerce Bank came on board as the title sponsor in 2004.
In the two-plus decades of Commerce Bank Championship action, a number of
the game’s biggest names have played in, and claimed victory at, the event. Jack
Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Raymond Floyd have all teed it up at the Commerce
Bank Championship, and Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Jim Thorpe, Bruce Fleisher and
George Archer have all won the championship multiple times. Meanwhile, players
such as Fleisher, Dana Quigley, Bobby Wadkins and Lonnie Nielsen – the longtime
New York professional – have all earned their first Champions Tour victories at
the Commerce Bank Championship.
Nielsen’s victory at last year’s Commerce Bank Championship was especially
sweet. After celebrating his 54th birthday on the event’s first day, Nielsen rolled
to a two-stroke victory over Loren Roberts for his first Champions Tour victory.
Winning was nothing new to Nielsen, who counts more than 30 victories in PGA
of America events and smaller tours. But the two-time New York State Open
